बालोऽहं तावदिच्छातो यतिष्ये श्रेयसे युवा।
युवाहं वार्द्धके प्राप्ते करिष्याम्यात्मनो हितम्॥ ७२॥
वृद्धोऽहं मम कार्याणा समस्तानि न गोचरे।
किं करिष्यामि मन्दात्मा समर्थेन न यत्कृतम्॥ ७३॥
एवं दुराशया क्षिप्तमानस: पुरुष: सदा।
श्रेयसोऽभिमुखं याति न कदाचित्पिपासित:॥ ७४॥
अनुवाद
जो व्यक्ति ऐसी झूठी आशाओं से व्याकुल रहता है कि 'अभी मैं बालक हूँ, अतः अपनी इच्छानुसार क्रीड़ा कर सकता हूँ, जब युवा हो जाऊँगा तब कल्याण का प्रयत्न करूँगा' [तब युवा होने पर वह कहता है कि] 'अभी मैं युवा हूँ, जब वृद्ध हो जाऊँगा तब अपना कल्याण करूँगा' और [वृद्ध होने पर वह सोचता है कि] 'अब मैं वृद्ध हो गया हूँ, अब मेरी इन्द्रियाँ अपने कार्यों में नहीं लगतीं, जब मेरा शरीर दुर्बल हो गया तो मैं क्या कर सकता हूँ? जब मेरे पास बल था तब मैंने कुछ नहीं किया', वह अपने कल्याण के मार्ग पर कभी आगे नहीं बढ़ता; वह केवल भोग की इच्छा में ही बेचैन रहता है। 72-74।
A person who is disturbed by such false hopes that 'Right now I am a child, so I can play as per my wish, when I attain youth I will try to achieve welfare' [then when he becomes young he says that] 'Right now I am young, when I am old I will achieve welfare of myself' and [when he becomes old he thinks that] 'Now I have become old, now my senses do not engage in their activities, when my body has become weak what can I do? When I had the strength I did not do anything', he never progresses on the path of his welfare; he remains restless only in the desire for enjoyment. 72-74.
