शल्य बोले- वीर राजन! देखो, यह युद्धभूमि कितनी भयानक लग रही है, मरे हुए मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और हाथियों के शवों से भरी हुई। पर्वताकार हाथी, जिनके सिरों से मद की धाराएँ निकल रही थीं, बाणों से बिंध जाने के कारण गिर पड़े हैं। उनमें से बहुत से पीड़ा से छटपटा रहे हैं, बहुत से मर गए हैं। उन पर बैठे सवारों के कवच, अस्त्र, ढाल और तलवारें नष्ट हो गई हैं। उन्हें देखकर ऐसा प्रतीत होता है, मानो वज्र के प्रहार से बड़े-बड़े पर्वत ढह गए हों और उनकी चट्टानें, विशाल वृक्ष और औषधियाँ चकनाचूर हो गई हों। उन हाथियों के घंटियाँ, अंकुश, गदाएँ और ध्वजाएँ, सब बाणों के प्रहार से टूटकर बिखर गए हैं। उन हाथियों के शरीर पर सोने की जाली का आवरण बना हुआ है। उनके शव रक्त की धारा में नहा रहे हैं। घोड़े बाणों से बिंधकर, पीड़ा से आहें भरते और मुँह से रक्त उगलते हुए गिर पड़े हैं। वे करुण क्रंदन कर रहे हैं। उनकी आँखें घूम रही हैं। वे भूमि में दाँत गड़ाकर करुण क्रंदन कर रहे हैं। हाथी, घोड़े, पैदल सेना और वीर सेना बाणों से घायल होकर मृत पड़े हैं। कुछ की साँसें चल रही हैं और कुछ पूरी तरह मर गए हैं। हाथी, घोड़े, मनुष्य और रथ कुचले गए हैं। उन सबकी चमक फीकी पड़ गई है। इस कारण उस महायुद्ध की भूमि निश्चय ही वैतरणी के समान प्रतीत हो रही है॥2-6॥

Looking at them, it seems as if big mountains have collapsed due to the impact of thunderbolt and their rocks, huge trees and medicinal plants have been shattered. The bells, goads, maces and flags of those elephants have all been shattered and scattered due to the impact of arrows. Those elephants have a cover made of gold mesh. Their corpses are bathed in the flow of blood. The horses have fallen down, pierced by arrows, sighing in pain and vomiting blood from their mouths. They are making pitiful cries. Their eyes are rolling. They dig their teeth into the ground and cry pitifully. Elephants, horses, infantry and the brave crowd are lying dead, wounded by arrows. Some are breathing a little and some have died completely. Elephants, horses, men and chariots have been crushed. The shine of all of them has dimmed. Because of this, the ground of that great war certainly appears like the Vaitarni.॥2-6॥
