उसके ऐसा कहने पर नारदजी ने उसे उत्तर दिया- 'मन में संकल्प करके, वचनों से प्रतिज्ञा लेकर, बुद्धि से पूर्ण निश्चय करके, परस्पर वार्तालाप द्वारा तथा संकल्परूपी जल हाथ में लेकर किया गया कन्यादान, वर द्वारा कन्या का हाथ पकड़ना तथा वैदिक मन्त्रों का उच्चारण, ये वधू प्राप्ति के प्रसिद्ध अनुष्ठान हैं; किन्तु केवल इतने से ही कन्या के हाथ पकड़ने की पूर्णता सुनिश्चित नहीं होती। इसकी पूर्ण श्रद्धा सप्तपदी मानी गई है।॥15-16॥
On his saying this, Narada replied to him- 'The kanyadaan (gift) done by making a resolve in the mind, taking a vow through words, with full determination through the intellect, by mutual conversation and by taking the water of the resolve in the hand, the taking of the hand of the bride by the groom and recitation of Vedic mantras, these are the famous rituals for the attainment of the bride; but the completeness of the taking of the hand of the bride is not ensured by this alone. Its complete devotion is considered to be Saptapadi.॥ 15-16॥
