पांडवपुत्र युधिष्ठिर अपने रथ की भीषण गर्जना से पृथ्वी को गुंजायमान कर रहे थे, जैसे वर्षा ऋतु में दसों दिशाओं में गर्जना करते बादल गूँजते हैं। शत्रुसंहारक भीमसेन के पार्श्व की रक्षा का भार उन्होंने अपने ऊपर ले लिया था। उधर, द्रोणाचार्य भी रात्रि में पांडव और पांचाल सैनिकों का संहार करने लगे।
