तदनन्तर उस माया से भयभीत होकर आपके समस्त सैनिक युद्ध से विमुख हो गए। उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को तथा द्रोण, दुर्योधन, शल्य और अश्वत्थामा को भी इस प्रकार देखा - वे सब के सब टुकड़े-टुकड़े होकर भूमि पर तड़प रहे थे, रक्त से लथपथ थे और दयनीय अवस्था में थे। कौरवों में जो बड़े-बड़े धनुर्धर और प्रधान योद्धा थे, वे प्रायः सभी सारथि नष्ट हो गए हैं। सभी राजा मारे गए हैं और हजारों घोड़े और घुड़सवार टुकड़े-टुकड़े होकर पड़े हैं।॥ 42-45॥
Then, afraid of that illusion, all your soldiers turned away from the battle. They saw each other and also Drona, Duryodhana, Shalya and Ashvatthama in this manner – all of them were torn to pieces and were writhing on the ground and were covered in blood and were in a pitiable state. The great archers and chief warriors among the Kauravas, almost all those charioteers have been destroyed. All the kings have been killed and thousands of horses and horsemen are lying in pieces.॥ 42-45॥
