नारदजी बोले - मातले! नागलोक के नाभिस्थान (मध्य) में स्थित यह जो नगर दिखाई देता है, उसे पाताल कहते हैं। इस नगर में राक्षस और दानव निवास करते हैं। पृथ्वी से जो भी प्राणी जल के साथ तैरता हुआ यहाँ आता है, वह इस पाताल में पहुँचकर भय से व्याकुल हो जाता है और जोर-जोर से चिल्लाने लगता है॥1-2॥
Naradji said - Matale! This city which is seen situated in the nabhisthan (middle) of Naglok is called Patala. Demons and devils reside in this city. Any living creature from the earth which comes here floating with the water, on reaching this Patala, they become afflicted with fear and start screaming loudly.॥ 1-2॥
