निवार्यमाणश्च कुरुप्रवीर:
सर्वै: सुहृद्भिर्ह्ययमप्यतज्ज्ञ:।
स दीव्यमान: प्रतिदीव्य चैनं
गान्धारराजस्य सुतं मताक्षम्॥ ९॥
हित्वा हि कर्णं च सुयोधनं च
समाह्वयद् देवितुमाजमीढ:।
दुरोदरास्तत्र सहस्रशोऽन्ये
युधिष्ठिरो यान् विषहेत जेतुम्॥ १०॥
उत्सृज्य तान् सौबलमेव चायं
समाह्वयत् तेन जितोऽक्षवत्याम्।
अनुवाद
अजमीढ़ वंश के कौरवों में श्रेष्ठ युधिष्ठिर जुआ खेलना नहीं जानते थे। इसीलिए उनके सभी मित्रों ने उन्हें मना किया था, (परन्तु उन्होंने किसी की नहीं सुनी।) दूसरी ओर गांधार नरेश का पुत्र शकुनि जुआ खेलने में निपुण था। यह जानते हुए भी वह बार-बार उनके साथ जुआ खेलता रहा। कर्ण और दुर्योधन को छोड़कर उसने शकुनि को अपने साथ जुआ खेलने की चुनौती दी। उस सभा में अन्य हजारों जुआरी उपस्थित थे, जिन्हें युधिष्ठिर हरा सकते थे। परन्तु उन सबको छोड़कर उन्होंने केवल सुबल के पुत्र को ही बुलाया। इसीलिए वे उस जुए में हार गए।
Yudhishthira, the best of the Kurus from the Ajamidh dynasty, did not know the game of gambling. That is why all his friends had forbidden him, (but he did not listen to anyone.) On the other hand, Shakuni, the son of the king of Gandhar, was an expert in gambling. Despite knowing this, he kept playing with him again and again. Leaving aside Karna and Duryodhan, he challenged Shakuni to play gambling with him. There were thousands of other gamblers present in that gathering, whom Yudhishthira could have defeated. But leaving aside all of them, he called only the son of Subala. That is why he lost in that gambling. 9-10 1/2.
