बृहस्पतिजी बोले- शंकर! जब आपने इन्द्र के उस महान पद का परित्याग कर दिया, तब देवतागण भयभीत हो गए और किसी अन्य इन्द्र की कामना करने लगे। तब देवता, पितर, ऋषिगण और प्रमुख गन्धर्व- सभी मिलकर राजा नहुष के पास गए। शंकर! वहाँ उन्होंने नहुष से इस प्रकार कहा- 'आप हमारे राजा बनकर सम्पूर्ण जगत की रक्षा कीजिए।' यह सुनकर नहुष ने उनसे कहा- 'मुझमें इन्द्र बनने की शक्ति नहीं है, अतः आप सभी अपने तप और तेज से मुझे संतुष्ट कीजिए।'॥ 23-24॥
Brihaspati said- Shankar! When you abandoned that great position of Indra, then the gods became afraid and started wishing for some other Indra. Then the gods, ancestors, sages and chief Gandharvas- all together went to king Nahush. Shankar! There they told Nahush in this way- 'You become our king and protect the whole world.' On hearing this Nahush said to them- 'I do not have the power to become Indra, so you all please satisfy me with your penance and brilliance.'॥ 23-24॥
