जनमेजय बोले - हे प्रभु ! दुर्योधन पाप कर्मों में अधिक प्रवृत्त था। वह पराए धन के लोभ से मोहित हो गया था। दुष्ट लोगों में उसकी रुचि थी। उसने मरने का निश्चय कर लिया था। वह अपने कुटुम्बियों के लिए दुःख का कारण था और अपने भाइयों तथा सम्बन्धियों के दुःख को बढ़ाता था। उसने अपने मित्रों को दुःख दिया और अपने शत्रुओं का सुख बढ़ाया। उसके भाइयों तथा सम्बन्धियों ने दुर्योधन को ऐसे कुमार्ग पर चलने से क्यों नहीं रोका? किसी मित्र, शुभचिंतक अथवा पितामह भगवान व्यास ने दया करके उसे क्यों नहीं रोका ?॥1-3॥
Janamejaya said— O Lord! Duryodhan was more inclined towards evil deeds. He was deluded by his greed for other's wealth. He was fond of wicked people. He had decided to die. He was a cause of sorrow for his family members and increased the grief of his brothers and relatives. He caused pain to his friends and increased the happiness of his enemies. Why did his brothers and relatives not stop Duryodhan from following such a bad path? Why did no friend, well-wisher or grandfather Lord Vyas stop him out of kindness?॥1-3॥
