(रथेषु युज्यमानेषु कङ्को राजानमब्रवीत्।
मयाप्यस्त्रं चतुर्मार्गमवाप्तमृषिसत्तमात्॥
दंशितो रथमास्थाय पदं निर्याम्यहं गवाम्।
अयं च बलवाञ्छूरो बल्लवो दृश्यतेऽनघ॥
गोसंख्यमश्वबन्धं च रथेषु समयोजय।
नैते न जातु युध्येयुर्गवार्थमिति मे मति:॥ )
अथ मत्स्योऽब्रवीद् राजा शतानीकं जघन्यजम्॥ २०॥
अनुवाद
जब रथ जुते जा रहे थे, तब कंक ने राजा विराट से कहा, "मैंने भी एक महर्षि से चतुर्विध धनुर्वेद की शिक्षा प्राप्त की है। अतः मैं भी कवच धारण करके रथ पर बैठकर गौओं के पदचिह्नों का अनुसरण करूँगा। हे निष्पाप राजन! यह बल्लव नामक रसोइया भी बलवान और वीर प्रतीत होता है। इसे भी गौशाला के प्रधान तन्तिपाल, जो गौओं की गणना करता है, तथा ग्रन्थिका, जो घोड़ों के प्रशिक्षण की व्यवस्था करता है, के साथ रथ पर बिठा दीजिए। मुझे विश्वास है कि वे गौओं के लिए युद्ध करने से कभी विमुख नहीं होंगे।" तत्पश्चात् मत्स्यराज ने अपने छोटे भाई शतानीक से कहा,
