उस सर्प ने उस समय हाथ जोड़कर काँपते हुए नल से कहा, 'हे राजन! मुझे कर्कोटक नाग ही समझो। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! एक दिन मैंने महातपस्वी ब्रह्मर्षि नारद को छल लिया था, अतः हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! उन्होंने क्रोध में भरकर मुझे शाप दे दिया - 'तुम एक स्थान पर स्थिर वृक्ष की भाँति पड़े रहो, जब भी राजा नल आकर तुम्हें यहाँ से ले जाएँगे, तभी तुम मेरे शाप से मुक्त हो सकोगे।'
That serpent, trembling with folded hands, said to Nala at that time, 'O King! Consider me as Karkotaka serpent. O Lord of men! One day I deceived the great ascetic Brahmarshi Narada, so O Lord of men! He, filled with anger, cursed me - 'You should lie in one place like a stationary tree, whenever King Nala comes and takes you from here, only then you will be able to get rid of my curse.'
