वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं - जनमेजय! धर्मराज से अनुमति पाकर सत्यवादी और पराक्रमी पाण्डव अपने वनवास के तेरहवें वर्ष के विषय में विचार-विमर्श करने के लिए एकत्र हुए। वे सभी महान विद्वान् और महान व्रतों का पालन करने वाले थे। वनवास के समय पाण्डवों के साथ स्नेहवश रहने वाले तपस्वी ब्राह्मण, वनवास के लिए अनुमति लेने हेतु हाथ जोड़कर खड़े हो गए और इस प्रकार बोले -॥1-3॥
Vaishampayana says - Janamejaya! After getting permission from Dharmaraj, the truthful and valiant Pandavas gathered together to discuss about the thirteenth year of their exile. All of them were great scholars and were great observers of fasts. During the exile, the ascetic Brahmins who lived with the Pandavas due to their affection for them, stood up with folded hands to seek their permission for exile and spoke thus -॥1-3॥
