मार्कण्डेयजी कहते हैं - युधिष्ठिर! तत्पश्चात एक दिन जब पतिव्रता स्त्री सीता पति वियोग की पीड़ा से पीड़ित होकर, मैले वस्त्र और केवल चूड़ी धारण करके, राक्षसियों से घिरी हुई एक शिला पर बैठी हुई करुण क्रंदन कर रही थी, उसी समय देवता, दानव, गन्धर्व, यक्ष और किम्पुरुष किसी से भी युद्ध में पराजित न होने वाला रावण प्रेम के बाणों से पीड़ित होकर अशोक वाटिका में गया। वहाँ उसने सीता को देखा और प्रेम की पीड़ा से व्याकुल होकर उसके पास गया।॥1-3॥
Markandeya says - Yudhishthira! Thereafter one day when Sita, the devoted wife, was suffering from the pain of separation from her husband, wearing dirty clothes and only a bangle as ornament, was sitting on a rock surrounded by demonesses and crying pitifully, at that very time Ravana, who was never defeated in battle by any of the gods, demons, Gandharvas, Yakshas and Kimpurusha, went to Ashok Vatika, afflicted by the arrows of love. There he saw Sita and, distressed by the pain of love, he went near her.॥1-3॥
