एक हजार चतुर्युगियों के पश्चात् यह पृथ्वी उपर्युक्त एकार्णव के जल में डूब जाती है। तत्पश्चात् नारायण नाम से प्रसिद्ध भगवान श्रीहरि उस एकार्णव के जल में शयन करने के लिए रात्रिकालीन अंधकार (तमोगुण) से युक्त महारात्रि का निर्माण करते हैं। उस भगवान के हजारों नेत्र, हजारों चरण और हजारों सिर हैं। वे अन्तर्यामी हैं और इन्द्रियों से परे होने पर भी शयन की इच्छा से वे हजारों फनों वाले भयंकर दिखने वाले शेषनाग को अपना प्रिय बना लेते हैं। वे शेषनाग हजारों प्रचण्ड सूर्यों के समूह के समान अनन्त एवं असीम तेज वाले हैं। उनकी कान्ति पुष्प, चन्द्रमा, मुक्त फल, गौ के दूध, कमल पुष्प तथा कुमुदिनी के समान उज्ज्वल है। भगवान श्रीहरि अपना शयन स्वयं करके शयन करते हैं।
After the end of one thousand Chaturyugis, this earth gets submerged in the waters of the above mentioned Ekarnava. Thereafter, Lord Sri Hari, famous by the name Narayana, creates Maharatri for himself, filled with night-time darkness (Tamogun), to sleep in the waters of that Ekarnava. That God has thousands of eyes, thousands of feet and thousands of heads. He is an inner man and even after being beyond the senses, with the desire to sleep, he makes that Sheshnaag, who looks terrible with thousands of hoods, as his lover. That Sheshnag possesses infinite and boundless radiance like a group of a thousand fierce suns. His radiance is as bright as the flower, the moon, the free-flowing fruit, the milk of the cow, the lotus flower and the lily of the valley. Lord Shri Hari sleeps after making his own bed.
