किं कारणमित्यपृच्छत्। अथाचष्टाष्टकस्य गृहे मया उषितं स मां रथेनानुप्रावहदथापश्यमनेकानि गोसहस्राणि वर्णशो विविक्तानि तमहमपृच्छं कस्येमा गाव इति सोऽब्रवीत्। मया निसृष्टा इत्येतास्तेनैव स्वयं श्लाघति कथितेन। एषोऽवतरेदथ त्रिभिर्यातव्यं साम्प्रतं कोऽवतरेत्॥ ५॥

तब उन्होंने पूछा, 'क्या कारण है कि केवल अष्टक ही अवतरित होगा?' तब नारदजी बोले, 'एक दिन मैं अष्टक के घर ठहरा हुआ था। उस दिन अष्टक मुझे रथ पर बिठाकर भ्रमण करा रहा था। मार्ग में मैंने भिन्न-भिन्न रंग-बिरंगी हजारों गायों को अलग-अलग चरते देखा। उन्हें देखकर मैंने अष्टक से पूछा, 'ये गायें किसकी हैं?' उसने उत्तर दिया, 'ये मेरी दान की हुई गायें हैं।' इस प्रकार वह अपने ही दान का बखान करके अपनी प्रशंसा करता है। इसीलिए स्वर्ग से पहले उसे ही उतरना होगा।' तब उन्होंने पुनः पूछा, 'यदि हम तीनों भाई स्वर्ग जाएँ, तो पहले किसे उतरना होगा?'॥5॥
Then he asked, 'What is the reason that only Ashtak will descend?' Then Naradji said, 'One day I was staying at Ashtak's house. That day Ashtak was taking me for a tour in a chariot. On the way I saw thousands of cows of different colors grazing separately. Seeing them I asked Ashtak, 'Whose cows are these?' He replied, 'These are my donated cows.' In this way he praises himself by boasting about his own donations. That is why he will have to descend first from heaven.' Then they again asked, 'If we three brothers go to heaven, then who will have to descend first?'॥ 5॥
