एवं रात्रौ स्म कुर्वन्ति विविशुश्चार्णवं दिवा।
भरद्वाजाश्रमे चैव नियता ब्रह्मचारिण:॥ ५॥
वाय्वाहाराम्बुभक्षाश्च विंशति: संनिषूदिता:।
एवं क्रमेण सर्वांस्तानाश्रमान् दानवास्तदा॥ ६॥
निशायां परिबाधन्ते मत्ता भुजबलाश्रयात्।
कालोपसृष्टा: कालेया घ्नन्तो द्विजगणान् बहून्॥ ७॥
न चैनानन्वबुध्यन्त मनुजा मनुजोत्तम।
एवं प्रवृत्तान् दैत्यांस्तांस्तापसेषु तपस्विषु॥ ८॥
अनुवाद
इस प्रकार वे रात्रि में तपस्वी ऋषियों का वध करते और दिन में समुद्र के जल में प्रवेश करते थे। भारद्वाज ऋषि के आश्रम में, वायु और जल पीकर संयमपूर्वक जीवन व्यतीत करने वाले बीस ब्रह्मचारियों को कलेय दैत्यों ने मृत्यु के मुख में डाल दिया था। इस प्रकार एक-एक करके सभी आश्रमों में जाकर और अपने बाहुबल के बल पर उन्मत्त होकर, राक्षस रात्रि में वहाँ के निवासियों को कष्ट पहुँचाते थे। हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ! कलेय काल के अधीन होते जा रहे थे, इसीलिए वे असंख्य ब्राह्मणों का वध करते जा रहे थे। मनुष्यों को उनके षडयंत्र का पता न चले। इस प्रकार वे तपस्वी तपस्वियों का वध करने में लगे हुए थे। 5-8।
In this way they used to kill the ascetic sages at night and enter the ocean waters during the day. In the hermitage of sage Bharadwaj, twenty brahmacaris who were living with discipline by drinking air and water were thrown into the jaws of death by the Kaleyas. In this way, going to all the hermitages one by one and being mad on the basis of their physical strength, the demons used to trouble the residents there at night. O best of men! The Kaleyas were becoming subservient to time; that is why they went on killing innumerable Brahmins. Human beings did not come to know of their conspiracy. In this way they were engaged in killing the ascetics who were rich in penance. 5-8.
