उत्तम व्रत का पालन करने वाले तथा विधिपूर्वक चान्द्रायण व्रत करने के इच्छुक ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय या वैश्य के लिए पहला कार्य यह है कि वह नियमों के अंतर्गत रहते हुए पंचगव्य द्वारा सम्पूर्ण शरीर को शुद्ध करे। तत्पश्चात कृष्ण पक्ष के अंत में दाढ़ी, मूंछ आदि सहित सिर का मुंडन करवाना चाहिए।
