ब्राह्मण दत्तात्रेय उस पर अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने उसे तीन वर मांगने की अनुमति दे दी। वर मांगने की अनुमति पाकर राजा ने कहा, 'भगवन्! युद्ध में मेरी सहस्त्र भुजाएँ हो सकती हैं, किन्तु घर में मेरी दो ही भुजाएँ हों। युद्धस्थल में सभी सैनिक मेरी सहस्त्र भुजाओं का दर्शन करें। हे कठोर व्रतधारी गुरुदेव! मैं अपने पराक्रम से सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त करूँ। इस प्रकार धर्मानुसार पृथ्वी को प्राप्त करके आलस्यरहित होकर इस पर शासन करूँ। हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! इन तीन वर के अतिरिक्त मैं आपसे एक चौथा वर भी माँगता हूँ। हे निष्पाप मुनि! मुझ पर दया करने के लिए मुझे वह वर भी प्रदान कीजिए। मैं आपका आश्रित भक्त हूँ। यदि कभी मैं धर्ममार्ग को त्यागकर कुमार्ग का आश्रय लूँ, तो श्रेष्ठ पुरुष मुझे धर्ममार्ग पर लाने की शिक्षा दें।'
Brahmin Dattatreya was very pleased with him and he permitted him to ask for three boons. On receiving his permission to ask for a boon, the king said, 'Lord! I may have a thousand arms in the war, but at home I may have only two arms. All the soldiers may see my thousand arms in the battlefield. O Gurudev who observes a strict vow! May I conquer the entire earth with my might. Having thus obtained the earth according to the Dharma, I may rule it without laziness. O best of Brahmins! Apart from these three boons, I also ask for a fourth boon from you. O innocent sage! To show mercy on me, please grant me that boon as well. I am your dependent devotee. If ever I abandon the right path and take refuge in the wrong path, then may the best men teach me to bring me back on the right path.'
