श्लोक  13.1.45-46 
सर्प उवाच
कार्याभावे क्रिया न स्यात् सत्यसत्यपि कारणे।
तस्मात् समेऽस्मिन् हेतौ मे वाच्यो हेतुर्विशेषत:॥ ४५॥
यद्यहं कारणत्वेन मतो लुब्धक तत्त्वत:।
अन्य: प्रयोगे स्यादत्र किल्बिषी जन्तुनाशने॥ ४६॥
 
 
अनुवाद
सर्प बोला - शिकारी! चाहे कारण हो या न हो, कारण के बिना कोई भी कार्य नहीं होता। अतः यद्यपि हम (मैं और मृत्यु) समान रूप से यहाँ हेतु हैं, तथापि कारण होने के कारण यह अपराध विशेष रूप से मृत्यु पर लगाया जा सकता है। यदि तुम मुझे ही इस बालक की मृत्यु का वास्तविक कारण मानते हो, तो यह तुम्हारी भूल है। वस्तुतः विचार करने पर दूसरा (मृत्यु) ही कारणवश अपराधी सिद्ध होगा; क्योंकि वही प्राणियों के विनाश का अपराधी है ॥45-46॥
 
The snake said - Hunter! Whether the instigating agent exists or not, no action takes place without the instigating agent. Hence, though we (I and death) are equally the cause here, yet, being the instigator, this offence can be specifically imposed on death. If you consider me to be the actual cause of this child's death, then it is your mistake. In fact, on thinking, the other (death) will be proved to be the culprit due to the instigation; because he is the culprit in the destruction of creatures. ॥ 45-46॥
