महर्षि अधोक्षज शब्द को तीन अलग-अलग शब्दों का समूह मानते हैं - 'अ' का अर्थ है प्रलय का स्थान, 'धोक्ष' का अर्थ है पालन-पोषण का स्थान और 'ज' का अर्थ है उत्पत्ति का स्थान। नारायण ही उत्पत्ति, पालन और प्रलय का स्थान हैं; अतः भगवान नारायण के अतिरिक्त संसार में अन्य किसी को 'अधोक्षज' नहीं कहा जा सकता।
Maharshis consider the word Adhokshaj to be a group of three separate words – ‘a’ means place of dissolution, ‘dhoksh’ means place of upbringing and ‘ja’ means place of origin. Narayana is the only place of origin, sustenance and dissolution; hence, except Lord Narayana, no one else in the world can be called ‘Adhokshaj’.
