युधिष्ठिर उवाच
बहूनां यज्ञतपसामेकार्थानां पितामह।
धर्मार्थं न सुखार्थार्थं कथं यज्ञ: समाहित:॥ १॥
अनुवाद
युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा - पितामह ! यज्ञ और तप तो बहुत हैं और वे सब भगवान की प्रीति के लिए ही किए जा सकते हैं; परंतु उनमें से वह यज्ञ किस प्रकार किया जाता है जिसका उद्देश्य केवल धर्म ही हो और जिससे स्वर्गिक सुख या धन की प्राप्ति न हो?॥1॥
Yudhishthir asked – Grandfather! There are many sacrifices and penances and all of them can be done only for the love of God; But among them, how is the Yagya performed whose purpose is only for religion and does not lead to heavenly happiness or wealth? 1॥
