व्यासजी बोले, "बेटा! जब गृहस्थ के सिर के बाल सफेद हो जाएँ, शरीर झुर्रीदार हो जाए और पुत्र भी हो जाए, तो उसे अपने जीवन का तीसरा भाग बिताने के लिए वन में जाकर वानप्रस्थ आश्रम में रहना चाहिए। वानप्रस्थ आश्रम में भी उसे उन्हीं अग्नियों का भस्म करना चाहिए, जिनकी वह गृहस्थ आश्रम में पूजा करता था। इसके साथ ही उसे प्रतिदिन देवताओं की पूजा भी करते रहना चाहिए॥4-5॥
Vyasa said, "Son! When the hair on a householder's head turns white, his body becomes wrinkled and his son also has a son, he should go to the forest to spend the third part of his life and live in the Vanaprastha Ashram. He should also consume the same fires in the Vanaprastha Ashram, which he used to worship in the Grihastha Ashram. Along with this, he should also keep worshipping the gods daily. ॥ 4-5॥
