तत्पश्चात् मूल प्रश्न पर वादी और प्रतिवादी में बड़ा भारी विवाद छिड़ गया। उनमें से बहुत से लोग क्रोध में भरकर एक-दूसरे के बर्तन, लकड़ियाँ, छाल, मृगचर्म और वस्त्र तक नष्ट करने लगे। तत्पश्चात् शान्त होने पर उन सभी श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों ने महर्षि वशिष्ठ से कहा - 'भगवन्! आप ही हमें सनातन तत्त्व का उपदेश दीजिए।' यह सुनकर वशिष्ठ ने उत्तर दिया - 'हे ब्राह्मणो! मैं उस सनातन तत्त्व के विषय में कुछ भी नहीं जानता।'
Thereafter, a huge debate arose between the plaintiff and the defendant on the basic question. Many of them, filled with anger, started destroying each other's vessels, sticks, bark, deerskin and even clothes. After that, on calming down, all those great Brahmins said to Maharishi Vasishta - 'Lord! You only should teach us the eternal principle.' Hearing this, Vasishta replied - 'O Brahmins! I do not know anything about that eternal principle.'
