सुवर्चलोवाच
शब्दस्थानोऽत्र इत्युक्तस्तथार्थ इति मे कृतम्।
अर्थास्थितो न तिष्ठेच्च विरूढमिह भाषितम्॥
अनुवाद
सुवर्चला ने कहा, "शब्द का आधार अर्थात् वेद ही ईश्वर है जो अर्थ का स्रोत है। विद्वानों ने यही कहा है और मेरा भी यही मत है। उस अर्थ के आधार के बिना शब्द टिक नहीं सकता। किन्तु आप उनके बीच कोई निश्चित संबंध नहीं मानते, अतः आपका कथन यश के प्रतिकूल है।"
Suvarchala said, "The basis of the word i.e. the Vedas is the God who is the source of meaning. This is what the scholars have said and this is my opinion too. Without the basis of that meaning, the word cannot stand. But you do not believe in any fixed relation between them, hence your statement is contrary to fame."
