बुद्धि की जागृति आदि सभी अवस्थाएँ सत्व, रज और तम इन तीन गुणों से विभक्त हैं। इन अवस्थाओं से संबंधित सुख, दुःख आदि गुण एक-दूसरे से अनन्य हैं। वह आत्मा और बुद्धि के संयोग से इन सबका अनुभव करता है। इन्द्रियाँ भी उसी आत्मा का प्रभार रखती हैं, जिस प्रकार वायु काष्ठ रूपी अग्नि में प्रवेश करके अग्नि को उत्तेजित करती है, उसी प्रकार आत्मा इन्द्रियों को चेतना प्रदान करती है। 3॥
All the states of intellect like being aware, etc. are divided by these three gunas – Sattva, Raja and Tama. The qualities like happiness, sorrow etc. related to these states are unique to each other. He experiences all of them through the connection of the soul and intellect. The senses also have the charge of that soul in the same way as the Vayu (air) enters into the fire of wood and excites the fire, similarly the soul imparts consciousness to the senses. 3॥
