कहते हैं कि एक दिन राजा जनक को मूर्खता ने घेर लिया और वे धन, पुत्र, स्त्री, नाना प्रकार के रत्न, सनातन मार्ग और अग्निहोत्र सब त्यागकर दरिद्र हो गए। उन्होंने भिक्षुक का जीवन अपना लिया और मुट्ठी भर भुने हुए जौ खाकर जीवनयापन करने लगे। उन्होंने सब प्रकार के कर्म त्याग दिए। उनके मन में किसी के प्रति ईर्ष्या का भाव नहीं रहा। जब उनकी पत्नी ने अपने पति को ऐसी निर्भय अवस्था में देखा, तो वह उनके पास आकर क्रोधित हो उठी। उस बुद्धिमान और प्रिय रानी ने एकान्त में यह युक्तिसंगत बात कही-॥4-6॥
It is said that one day King Janaka was overcome by foolishness and he abandoned wealth, children, wife, various kinds of gems, the eternal path and Agnihotra and became destitute. He adopted the life of a mendicant and lived on a handful of roasted barley. He gave up all kinds of activities. There was no feeling of jealousy left in his mind towards anyone. When his wife saw her husband in such a fearless state, she came to him and became angry. That intelligent and beloved queen said this logical thing in private -॥ 4-6॥
