ब्राह्मण ने देखा कि गौतम के कंधे पर हंस का शव है, हाथ में धनुष-बाण है, सारा शरीर रक्त से लथपथ है, घर के द्वार पर आया हुआ गौतम नरभक्षी राक्षस के समान दिखाई दे रहा है; और उसका ब्राह्मणत्व नष्ट हो गया है। उसे इस अवस्था में घर आया देखकर ब्राह्मण ने उसे पहचान लिया। उसे पहचानकर वह अत्यन्त लज्जित हुआ और उससे इस प्रकार बोला -॥44-45॥
The Brahmin saw that Gautama had the dead body of a swan on his shoulder, he had a bow and arrow in his hand, his whole body was soaked in blood, Gautama who had come to the door of the house looked like a cannibalistic demon; and had lost his brahminhood. Seeing him come home in this state, the Brahmin recognised him. On recognising him, he felt very ashamed and spoke to him thus -॥44-45॥
