कालो हेतुं विकुरुते स्वार्थस्तमनुवर्तते॥ १५७॥
स्वार्थं प्राज्ञोऽभिजानाति प्राज्ञं लोकोऽनुवर्तते।
न त्वीदृशं त्वया वाच्यं विदुषि स्वार्थपण्डिते॥ १५८॥
अनुवाद
काल बुद्धि का स्वरूप बदल देता है; और स्वार्थ उस काल का अनुसरण करता रहता है। विद्वान् पुरुष उस स्वार्थ को समझ लेता है और सामान्य लोग विद्वान् पुरुष का अनुसरण करते हैं। तात्पर्य यह है कि मैं विद्वान् हूँ; अतः मैं आपके स्वार्थ को भलीभाँति समझता हूँ; अतः आपको मुझसे ऐसी बातें नहीं कहनी चाहिए॥ 157-158॥
‘Time changes the nature of reason; and selfishness keeps following that time. A learned man understands that selfishness and ordinary people follow the learned man. The meaning is that I am a learned man; therefore I understand your selfishness very well; hence you should not say such things to me.॥ 157-158॥
