वे भूत-प्रेतों के समूह अत्यंत भयानक और तेजस्वी थे तथा अपनी प्रभा चारों ओर फैला रहे थे। वे अश्वत्थामा में कितना बल है, यह जानना चाहते थे और यह भी देखना चाहते थे कि उसके सोते समय क्या महासंहार होने वाला है। वे महामना द्रोणपुत्र का तेज भी बढ़ाना चाहते थे; अतएव महादेव की स्तुति करते हुए वे चारों ओर से वहाँ पहुँचे। उनके हाथों में अत्यंत भयानक परिघ, जलती हुई लकड़ियाँ, त्रिशूल और कटघरे थे।
Those groups of ghosts were very fearsome and illustrious and were spreading their radiance all around. They wanted to know how much power Ashwatthama had and also wanted to see the great carnage that was going to happen while he was sleeping. They also wanted to increase the glory of the great-minded son of Drona; therefore, while praising Lord Mahadev, they reached there from all sides. In their hands were extremely fearsome Parighas, burning sticks, tridents and sashes.
