अश्वत्थामा ने कहा— हे प्रभु! आप उग्र, स्थाणु, शिव, रुद्र, शर्व, ईशान, ईश्वर और गिरीश नामों से विख्यात कल्याणकारी देवता हैं और सम्पूर्ण जगत के रचयिता हैं। आपके कंठ पर नीला चिह्न है। आप अजन्मा और शुद्धात्मा हैं। आपने ही दक्ष के यज्ञ का विध्वंस किया था। आप संहारक हर, जगतरूप, भयानक नेत्रों वाले, अनेक रूपों वाले और देवी उमा के प्रिय हैं। आप श्मशान में निवास करते हैं। आपको अपने बल का अभिमान है। आप अपने महान अनुयायियों के स्वामी, सर्वव्यापी और खट्वांगधारी हैं, आप भक्तों के दुःख दूर करने वाले रुद्र हैं, आप जटाधारी ब्रह्मचारी हैं। आपने त्रिपुरासुर का नाश किया है। मैं अपना बलिदान देकर शुद्ध मन से आपकी आराधना करूँगा, जो मंदबुद्धि लोगों के लिए अत्यंत कठिन है।॥ 2-5॥
Ashwatthama said— Lord! You are the benevolent god known by the names Ugra, Sthanu, Shiva, Rudra, Sharva, Ishan, Ishwar and Girish and are the creator of the entire universe. There is a blue mark on your neck. You are unborn and pure soul. You are the one who destroyed Daksha's sacrifice. You are the killer Hara, the form of the universe, the one with terrible eyes, having many forms and the beloved of Goddess Uma. You live in the crematorium. You are proud of your power. You are the lord of your great followers, omnipresent and carrying a khatvanga, you are Rudra who removes the sorrows of his devotees, you are a celibate with matted hair on your head. You have destroyed Tripurasur. I will worship you with a pure heart by sacrificing myself, which is very difficult for slow-witted people.॥ 2-5॥
