वैशम्पायन कहते हैं, "हे राजन! इसी समय तपस्विनी माधवी वहाँ आईं। उन्होंने अपने शरीर के सभी अंगों पर मृगचर्म ओढ़ा हुआ था। वृद्धावस्था प्राप्त होने पर वे मृग के साथ विहार करती थीं और मृग व्रत का पालन करती थीं। उनका आहार और क्रियाकलाप मृगों के समान ही थे। मृगों के समूह के साथ यज्ञ वेदी में प्रवेश करके उन्हें बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ और वे मृगों के साथ यज्ञ के धूम्र की सुगंध लेते हुए वहाँ विचरण करने लगीं।
Vaishampayana says, "O King! At this time the ascetic Madhavi came there. She had covered all her body parts with deerskin. After attaining old age, she was roaming with the deer and observing the deer fast. Her food and activities were similar to those of the deer. She was very surprised to enter the sacrificial altar with a herd of deer and started roaming there with the deer, taking in the fragrance of the sacrificial smoke.
