(वैशम्पायन कहते हैं—) तत्पश्चात् सुन्दरी देवयानी से अनुमति लेकर राजा ययाति अपने नगर को चले गए। नहुषनंदन ययाति के चले जाने पर धर्मपरायण एवं पतिव्रता देवयानी कहीं एक वृक्ष का सहारा लेकर दुःख से विलाप करती हुई खड़ी हो गई। जब पुत्री के घर लौटने में विलम्ब होने लगा, तब शुक्राचार्य ने धाय से कहा—'धात्री! तुम मेरी निर्मल मुस्कान वाली पुत्री देवयानी को शीघ्र ही यहाँ बुला लाओ।' उनके ऐसा कहते ही धाय उसे बुलाने चली गई। जहाँ-जहाँ देवयानी अपनी सखियों के साथ गई थी, धाय वहाँ-वहाँ उसके पदचिह्न ढूँढ़ती हुई गई और उसने देवयानी को पूर्वोक्त रीति से थकी हुई और दयनीय भाव से विलाप करते देखा।
(Vaishampayana says—) Thereafter, taking permission from the beautiful Devyani, King Yayati went to his city. After the departure of Nahushanandan Yayati, the virtuous and faithful Devyani stood somewhere, taking support of a tree, weeping in sorrow. When there was a delay in the daughter's return home, Shukracharya said to the nurse—'Nurse! You call my daughter Devyani, who has a pure smile, here soon.' As soon as he said this, the nurse immediately went to call her. Wherever Devyani had gone with her friends, the nurse went there searching for her footprints and she saw Devyani, weeping in the aforementioned manner, tired and pitifully.
