आक के पत्ते नमकीन, तीखे, कड़वे और रूखे होते हैं। उनकी तासीर तीक्ष्ण होती है (पाचन के समय वे पेट में एक प्रकार की ज्वाला उत्पन्न करते हैं); अतः उन्हें खाने से उपमन्यु की दृष्टि चली गई। वह अंधा हो गया। अंधा होते हुए भी वह इधर-उधर घूमता रहता था; अतः वह कुएँ में गिर पड़ा॥ 51॥
The leaves of Aak are salty, sharp, bitter and dry. Their effect is sharp (during digestion they create a kind of flame inside the stomach); hence by eating them Upamanyu lost his eyesight. He became blind. Despite being blind he kept roaming here and there; hence he fell into the well.॥ 51॥
