On seeing them, the citizens of the city used to argue among themselves and say such things – ‘These Brahmins are worth seeing. Their behavior and thoughts are pure and beautiful. Their appearance looks like that of the sons of gods. They are not fit to beg, they are fit to rule. Though they are delicate, they are engaged in penance. They have all kinds of auspicious characteristics. They are not fit to accept alms at all. Perhaps they are roaming around in the guise of beggars due to some work.’ Those citizens used to consider the arrival of the Pandavas as the arrival of their own relatives and used to keep vessels full of edibles ready for them and the Pandavas, who were observing a vow of silence, used to accept alms from them. We have been late since we came, that is why mother must be worried – thinking this, the Pandavas, bound in the bondage of mother’s pride, used to return to her in great haste.
