न हि तौ नोत्सहेयातां भीमसेनधनंजयौ।
तरसा वेगितात्मानौ निर्भेत्तुमपि मन्दिरम्।
परासुत्वं न पश्यामि पृथाया: सह पाण्डवै:॥
सर्वथा विकृतं नीतं यदि ते निधनं गता:।
धर्मराज: स निर्दिष्टो ननु विप्रैर्युधिष्ठिर:॥
सत्यव्रतो धर्मदत्त: सत्यवाक्छुभलक्षण:।
कथं कालवशं प्राप्त: पाण्डवेयो युधिष्ठिर:॥
आत्मानमुपमां कृत्वा परेषां वर्तते तु य:।
सह मात्रा तु कौरव्य: कथं कालवशं गत:॥
यौवराज्येऽभिषिक्तेन पितुर्येनाहृतं यश:।
आत्मनश्च पितुश्चैव सत्यधर्मस्य वृत्तिभि:॥
कालेन स हि सम्भग्नो धिक् कृतान्तमनर्थकम्॥
यच्च सा वनवासेन क्लेशिता दु:खभागिनी।
पुत्रगृध्नुतया कुन्ती न भर्तारं मृता त्वनु॥
अल्पकालं कुले जाता भर्तु: प्रीतिमवाप या।
दग्धाद्य सह पुत्रै: सा असम्पूर्णमनोरथा॥
पीनस्कन्धश्चारुबाहुर्मेरुकूटसमो युवा।
मृतो भीम इति श्रुत्वा मनो न श्रद्दधाति मे॥
अनिन्द्यानि च यो गच्छन् क्षिप्रहस्तो दृढायुध:।
प्रपत्तिमाँल्लब्धलक्ष्यो रथयानविशारद:॥
दूरपाती त्वसम्भ्रान्तो महावीर्यो महास्त्रवित् ।
अदीनात्मा नरव्याघ्र: श्रेष्ठ: सर्वधनुष्मताम्॥
येन प्राच्या: ससौवीरा दाक्षिणात्याश्च निर्जिता:।
ख्यापितं येन शूरेण त्रिषु लोकेषु पौरुषम्॥
यस्मिञ्जाते विशोकाभूत् कुन्ती पाण्डुश्च वीर्यवान्।
पुरन्दरसमो जिष्णु: कथं कालवशं गत:॥
कथं तावृषभस्कन्धौ सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनौ।
मर्त्यधर्ममनुप्राप्तौ यमावरिनिबर्हणौ॥

तदनन्तर, राजा पाण्डु के पुत्रों के अपनी माता सहित जलकर मर जाने की बात सुनकर भीष्म जी अत्यन्त व्यथित हो गये और विलाप करने लगे। भीष्म जी बोले - ऐसा नहीं लगता कि भीमसेन और अर्जुन दोनों भाइयों ने अपना उत्साह खो दिया है। यदि वे अपने शरीर को बलपूर्वक आगे बढ़ाते, तो वे एक मजबूत घर को भी तोड़ सकते थे। अतः मैं यह नहीं देखता कि पाण्डवों के साथ कुन्ती भी मर गई है। यदि वास्तव में वे सभी मर गए हैं, तो यह हर प्रकार से बहुत बुरी बात है। धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर के विषय में ब्राह्मणों ने कहा था कि धर्म द्वारा दिये गये ये राजकुमार सत्यनिष्ठ, सत्यनिष्ठ और शुभ गुणों वाले होंगे। ऐसा पाण्डव पुत्र युधिष्ठिर काल के अधीन कैसे हो गया? स्वयं को आदर्श बनाने वाले और दूसरों के साथ तदनुसार व्यवहार करने वाले कुरुवंश के शिरोमणि युधिष्ठिर अपनी माता के साथ काल के अधीन कैसे हो गये? युधिष्ठिर, जिन्होंने युवराज पद पर अभिषिक्त होते ही अपने पिता के समान सत्य और धर्मपूर्वक आचरण करके न केवल अपना, अपितु राजा पाण्डु का भी यश बढ़ाया था, वे भी काल के अधीन हो गए। ऐसे निकम्मे काल को धिक्कार है। कुलीन कुल में जन्मी कुन्ती, जिसने केवल पुत्रों की कामना से वनवास का कष्ट सहा और दुःख पर दुःख सहे तथा पति के मरने के बाद भी उसका अनुसरण न कर सकी, जिसे बहुत थोड़े समय के लिए ही पति का प्यार मिला था, वही कुन्ती भोजकुमारी अपनी कामना भी पूरी न कर सकी और अपने पुत्रों सहित भस्म हो गई! भरे हुए कंधों और सुन्दर भुजाओं वाले, मेरु शिखर के समान सुन्दर और तरुण भीमसेन की मृत्यु हो गई, यह सुनकर भी मन को विश्वास नहीं होता। जो सदैव श्रेष्ठ मार्गों पर चलते थे, जिनके हाथ अत्यंत फुर्तीले थे, जिनके हथियार अत्यंत प्रबल थे, जो अपने बड़ों पर आश्रित रहते थे, जिनका निशाना कभी चूकता नहीं था, जो रथ चलाने में कुशल थे, जो दूर से भी लक्ष्य भेद सकते थे, जो कभी बेचैन नहीं होते थे, जो अत्यंत पराक्रमी और महान अस्त्र-शस्त्रों के ज्ञाता थे, जिनका हृदय कभी निराश नहीं होता था, जो पुरुषों में सिंह के समान पराक्रमी और समस्त धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ थे, जिन्होंने पूर्व, सौवीर और दक्षिण के राजाओं को पराजित किया था, जो पराक्रमी योद्धा थे, जिन्होंने तीनों लोकों में अपने पराक्रम की कीर्ति फैलाई थी और जिनके जन्म से कुन्ती और पराक्रमी पाण्डु भी शोक से मुक्त हो गए थे, वे इन्द्र के समान तेजस्वी अर्जुन कैसे काल के ग्रास बन गये? जो बैल के समान सुदृढ़ कंधों से सुशोभित थे और सिंह की चाल से चलने वाले, शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले नकुल और सहदेव अचानक कैसे मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो गये?
