वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं - तत्पश्चात तपस्वी ऋषियों ने सत्यवादी पाण्डवों को धैर्य बँधाया तथा कुन्ती और माद्री को भी आश्वासन देते हुए कहा - 'शुभकामनाएँ! आपके दोनों पुत्र अभी बालक हैं, अतः आपको किसी भी प्रकार से शरीर का त्याग नहीं करना चाहिए। हम शत्रु पाण्डवों को कौरव राष्ट्र की राजधानी में भेज देंगे। राजा धृतराष्ट्र अन्यायपूर्ण धन के लोभी हैं, अतः वे पाण्डवों के साथ कभी भी योग्य व्यवहार नहीं कर सकते। कुन्ती के रक्षक और सहायक वृष्णिवंशी तथा राजा कुन्तिभोज हैं और माद्री के बलवान पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ उसका भाई शल्य है। इसमें संदेह नहीं कि पति के साथ मृत्यु को स्वीकार करना पत्नी के लिए महान् हितकारी है; तथापि यह कार्य तुम दोनों के लिए अत्यन्त कठिन है, ऐसा सभी श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण कहते हैं। जो पतिव्रता स्त्री है, वह पति के मर जाने पर भी ब्रह्मचर्य के पालन में अविचल भाव से लगी रहती है, मर्यादा-पालन का कष्ट सहन करती है, तथा मन, वाणी और शरीर से शुभ कर्म करती है, तथा कृच्छ्राचंद्रायण व्रत, उपवास और नियमों का पालन करती है। वह क्षार (पापड़ आदि) और नमक का त्याग कर देती है, दिन में केवल एक बार भोजन करती है और भूमि पर सोती है। वह जिस प्रकार से भी हो सके, अपने शरीर को सुखाने का प्रयत्न करती रहती है। किन्तु जिस स्त्री की बुद्धि विषय-भोगों से नष्ट हो गई है और जो अपने शरीर को पुष्ट करती रहती है, वह इस (दुर्लभ मनुष्य-) शरीर को व्यर्थ ही नष्ट कर देती है और निस्संदेह महान नरक को प्राप्त होती है। अतः पतिव्रता स्त्री के लिए उचित है कि वह अपने शरीर को सुखा दे, जिससे समस्त विषय-वासनाएँ नष्ट हो जाएँ। इस प्रकार शुभ लक्षणों वाली जो स्त्री उपर्युक्त धर्म का पालन करती हुई अपने पति का चिंतन करती रहती है, वह भी अपने पति को मुक्त कर देती है। इस प्रकार वह अपने, अपने पति और अपने पुत्र का इस संसार से उद्धार कर लेती है। अतः हम सोचते हैं कि तुम दोनों जीवित रहो, यही अच्छा है।
Vaishampayanji says - Thereafter, the ascetic sages gave patience to the truthful Pandavas and also assured Kunti and Madri and said - 'Good luck! Both of your sons are still children, hence you should not sacrifice your body in any way. We will send the enemy Pandavas to the capital of the Kaurava nation. King Dhritarashtra is greedy for unjust wealth, hence he can never treat the Pandavas as they deserve. Kunti's protector and helper is Vrishnivanshi and King Kuntibhoja and the best among the strong men of Madri is Shalya, her brother. There is no doubt that accepting death with the husband is of great benefit to the wife; However, this work is very difficult for both of you, this is said by all the best Brahmins. A woman who is a virtuous woman, after the death of her husband, remains unwaveringly engaged in the observance of celibacy, endures the pain of following the rules and regulations, and performs auspicious deeds done by the mind, speech and body, and observes the Krichchhrachandrayana fast, fasts and rules. She gives up alkali (papad etc.) and salt and eats only once a day and sleeps on the ground. She keeps trying to dry her body in whatever way she can. But a woman whose intellect is destroyed by sensual pleasures and who keeps on strengthening her body, destroys this (rare human-) body in vain and undoubtedly reaches a great hell. Therefore, it is appropriate for a virtuous woman to dry her body, so that all sensual desires are destroyed. In this way, a woman with auspicious characteristics who follows the above mentioned religion and keeps on thinking about her husband, also liberates her husband. In this way she saves herself, her husband and her son from this world. Therefore we think it is better that you both live.
