वीरसूनां काशिसुते देशानां कुरुजाङ्गलम्।
सर्वधर्मविदां भीष्म: पुराणां गजसाह्वयम्॥ २४॥
धृतराष्ट्रस्त्वचक्षुष्ट्वाद् राज्यं न प्रत्यपद्यत।
पारसवत्वाद् विदुरो राजा पाण्डुर्बभूव ह॥ २५॥
अनुवाद
‘वीर पुत्रों को जन्म देने वाली स्त्रियों में काशीराज की दोनों पुत्रियाँ श्रेष्ठ हैं। सम्पूर्ण देशों में कुरु-जंगल श्रेष्ठ है। समस्त धर्मज्ञों में भीष्म का स्थान सर्वोच्च है और समस्त नगरों में हस्तिनापुर श्रेष्ठ है।’ धृतराष्ट्र अंधे होने के कारण राज्य नहीं पा सके और विदुरजी पार्श्व (शूद्र के गर्भ से ब्राह्मण द्वारा उत्पन्न) होने के कारण राज्य नहीं पा सके। अतः सबसे छोटे पाण्डु राजा हुए॥24-25॥
‘Among the women who give birth to valiant sons, the two daughters of the King of Kashi are the best. Among all the countries, the Kuru-jangala is the best. Among all the wise men of Dharma, Bhishma has the highest place and among all the cities, Hastinapur is the best.’ Dhritarashtra could not get the kingdom because he was blind and Vidurji could not get the kingdom because he was a Parshava (born by a Brahmin from the womb of a Shudra). Hence, the youngest Pandu became the king.॥ 24-25॥
