ये त्विह वै राजन्या राजपुरुषा वा अपाखण्डा धर्मसेतून् भिन्दन्ति ते सम्परेत्य वैतरण्यां निपतन्ति भिन्नमर्यादास्तस्यां निरयपरिखाभूतायां नद्यां यादोगणैरितस्ततो भक्ष्यमाणा आत्मना न वियुज्यमानाश्चासुभिरुह्यमाना: स्वाघेन कर्मपाकमनुस्मरन्तो विण्मूत्रपूयशोणितकेशनखास्थिमेदोमांसवसावाहिन्यामुपतप्यन्ते ॥ २२ ॥
अनुवाद
जो मनुष्य श्रेष्ठ कुल में जन्म लेने के बाद भी अपने कर्तव्यों का पालन नहीं करता और अधम बन जाता है, वह मरने के बाद वैतरणी नदी में गिर जाता है। वैतरणी नदी नरक को घेरने वाली खाई के समान है और उसमें बहुत ही हिंसक जलजीव रहते हैं। जब पापी मनुष्य को वैतरणी नदी में फेंका जाता है, तो जल के जीव उसे तुरंत खाने लगते हैं। लेकिन, पापमय शरीर होने के कारण वह अपने शरीर को छोड़ नहीं पाता है। वह निरंतर अपने पापों को याद करता है और मल, मूत्र, पीब, रक्त, केश, नख, हड्डी, मज्जा, मांस और चर्बी से भरी हुई उस नदी में बहुत कष्ट पाता है।
A man who is born in a noble family—such as a Kshatriya, a royal family or an official class—but neglects to follow the prescribed rules and thus becomes a wretch, at the time of death falls into the river of hell called Vaitarni. This river is like a moat surrounding hell and is full of extremely ferocious aquatic creatures. When a sinful man is thrown into the river Vaitarni, the aquatic creatures immediately begin to eat him and because of his sinful body he is unable to leave his body. He constantly remembers his sinful deeds and suffers extreme tortures in that river filled with feces, urine, pus, blood, hair, nails, bones, marrow, flesh and fat.
