शाल्मलीद्वीप में एक शाल्मली वृक्ष है जो इतना विस्तृत और ऊँचा है जैसे कि प्लक्ष वृक्ष हो। अर्थात यह वृक्ष 100 योजन (800 मील) चौड़ा और 1100 योजन (8,800 मील) ऊँचा है। विद्वानों का कहना है कि यह विशाल वृक्ष पक्षियों के राजा और भगवान विष्णु के वाहन गरुड़ का निवासस्थान है। यहाँ गरुड़ भगवान विष्णु की वैदिक स्तुति करते हैं।
There is a Shalmali tree in Shalmali island, due to which this island got its name. It is as wide and high as the Plaksha tree, i.e. 100 yojanas 800 miles wide and 1100 yojanas 8800 miles high. Scholars say that this huge tree is the abode of Garuda, the king of birds and Vishnu's vehicle. Here Garuda offers Vedic praise to Lord Vishnu.
