To a newcomer, Bhakti yoga often looks like just another localized sectarian religion filled with distinct rituals, temples, and cultural attire. However, Vedic philosophers draw a sharp, critical distinction between standard mundane religion and the process of Bhakti. Religions are typically historical, social, and faith-based institutions that an individual can join, leave, or change through conversion. A person can be a Christian today, a Muslim tomorrow, and an atheist next year, meaning standard religion is an external, temporary designation (*upadhi*) tied to the material body and mind. Bhakti, however, is defined as *Sanatana Dharma*—the eternal, unalterable occupational characteristic of the soul. Just as the inherent nature of fire is heat and light, and the inherent nature of water is liquidity, the inherent, eternal nature of the soul is to render loving service (*seva*) to the Supreme Source. Bhakti is not a belief system; it is the scientific process of stripping away all temporary socio-religious designations to revive the soul's direct, personal, and unalloyed love of God.
