A major psychological barrier for newcomers is the perception that practicing Krishna consciousness requires adopting Indian nationality, changing one's ethnic identity, or conversion to a foreign religion. Srila Prabhupada explicitly declared that Krishna consciousness is not an ethnic religion or a geographical culture; it is 'Sanatana Dharma'—the constitutional, inherent occupation of every soul, transcending all material designations of race, country, or gender. While ISKCON temples utilize Sanskrit terminologies, traditional clothing (saris and dhotis), and specific ritual settings to optimize the mode of goodness (sattva-guna), these elements are functional spiritual tools rather than ethnic mandates. Anyone from any religious, national, or cultural background can easily practice by chanting the holy names, studying the philosophy, and spiritualizing their diet at home, without altering their legal passport, career, or traditional lineage.
