The month of *Kartik* (falling around October–November) is considered the most sacred, spiritually potent month of the entire year in the Gaudiya Vaishnav calendar. It is also known as *Damodara Masa*, named after a specific pastime where Lord Krishna, as a small child, allowed Himself to be bound around the waist (*udara*) with a rope (*dama*) by His mother, Yashoda, out of her pure, unalloyed parental love.

During this month, the internal spiritual energy of the Lord is uniquely accessible, and the rewards for any devotional activity are multiplied exponentially. The scriptures state that just as a retail store might offer an immense discount sale, the Lord offers a 'spiritual clearance sale' during Kartik, granting immense advancements for even minimal endeavors.

The central daily practice during Kartik is the offering of a small ghee lamp to the Deity of Lord Damodara every evening while singing the beautiful *Damodarashtakam* prayers composed by Satyavrata Muni. Devotees also adopt specific vows (*vratas*) for the month, such as increased chanting, cutting down on specific food items, reading extra scripture, and practicing strict celibacy. The emphasis is entirely on maximizing intimacy with the Lord, using the auspicious energy of the month to deepen one's internal love.
